Football Board Games Compared: Which One Is for You?

There is no single best football board game, because they do completely different things: some simulate the 90 minutes on the pitch, some simulate running the club. Here is an honest comparison of the main options, including our own game and what it is not good at.

Yes, we make one of these games. We still think you deserve a fair map of the genre, because a disappointed buyer who wanted a different kind of football game helps nobody.

The quick table

Game What it simulates Players Time Luck factor
Counter Attack The match itself, player by player 1-2 60-90 min Dice duels
Subbuteo The match, with your fingers 2 open Pure dexterity
Eleven: Football Manager A full club: finances, board, league season 1-4 60-120 min Low, heavy strategy
Sunday Manager The preseason transfer window of an amateur club 2-4 45-60 min No dice, auction psychology

Counter Attack

A matchday simulation by Giga Mech Games where two managers control eleven players each: passing, dribbling, tackling and shooting, with duels resolved by player skills plus dice. It has corners, free kicks, red cards and a lively online league community.

Strong: the closest thing to actually playing a match on your table; great head-to-head rivalry game.
Weak: two players only (solo variant aside), a full match takes an evening, and dice can break your heart.

Subbuteo

The 1947 classic. Miniature players on weighted bases, a cloth pitch and your fingers doing the work. It is a dexterity sport more than a strategy game.

Strong: iconic, physical, instantly understandable; genuine skill ceiling.
Weak: needs table space and practice; zero management or strategy layer.

Eleven: Football Manager Board Game

Portal Games' heavy economic strategy (2022): you run a professional club through a season, manage finances, deal with the board, upgrade the stadium and climb the league. Plays solo to four players.

Strong: the deepest club management experience in cardboard; strong solo mode.
Weak: 60-120 minutes of real brain burn with substantial rules overhead; the serious tone means less table banter.

Sunday Manager

Our game. A strategy game about the amateur level of football: a 4-week preseason where 2-4 managers fight over local legends in auctions, bluff, sabotage and build squads of glorious nobodies. No dice; the chaos comes from the other humans at the table.

Strong: fast (45-60 min), high player interaction, auction psychology instead of luck, 48 characters with backstories that keep the table laughing, easy to teach (free 11-minute digital Coach).
Weak: it does not simulate the match on the pitch at all, and it is not a 15-minute filler. If you want to dribble and shoot, Counter Attack or Subbuteo will make you happier.

So which one?

Want to play the match? Counter Attack (tactical) or Subbuteo (physical). Want to run a professional club in a deep euro game, possibly alone? Eleven. Want a fast, loud, tactical game night where four friends ruin each other's transfer plans? That is Sunday Manager, and our how to play overview shows exactly what you would be getting into.
